Aloo Gobi (recipe)

April 13th, 2008

Having recently discovered that I really love Indian food, I decided to give my favorite dish a try in the kitchen. We had plans to have dinner with friends, who also love Indian food, so what better to bring along? I found this recipe at AllRecipes, my favorite recipe site.

Aloo Gobi

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • salt to taste
  • 1 pound cauliflower
  • DIRECTIONS

      • Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Stir in the cumin seeds, garlic, and ginger paste. Cook about 1 minute until garlic is lightly browned. Add the potatoes. Season with turmeric, paprika, cumin, garam masala, and salt. Cover and continue cooking 5 to 7 minutes stirring occasionally.
      • Mix the cauliflower into the saucepan. Reduce heat to low and cover. Stirring occasionally, continue cooking 10 minutes, or until potatoes and cauliflower are tender.
      • Serve with some yummy ginger Basmati rice (cook Basmatic rice according to directions and add soem fresh minced ginger, or a 1 tablespoon ginger paste)

I found then after following this recipe, there wasn’t enough liquid for me. So I added about 2 cups of water, 1/2 stick of butter and re-added all of the seasonings (in the same amounts as listed) to make a good sauce. It was excellent the way it was, but I think the sauce makes it much better and is lovely with Basmati rice.

        What to try next?
